All Gave Some ... and
![]()
I understand that the opening
statement is meant for those that gave their lives while in the service
to our country, ... but, it seems to me, that it is also appropriate
for those, who after their service to their country, continued to serve
those in their arena, til the Lord brought them to his fold.
It has
been my experience over the last 50 years or so, that the vast
majority of people who have served in the Military, are respectful,
honest, hard working and family loving.
This is Perch Base's foundation
for ....
"Continued to Serve"
We are
duty bound to remember them.

Qualified on USS Nautilus (SSN571) in 1958 as ET2. At 1305 today May 18 2001, another shipmate has passed on. Gary Patterson was a life member of USSVI # L-0973 and a member of USSVI Arizona Perch Base since 1996. Other Boats he served on USS Scamp SSN588, from 60-65. USS Mariano G Vallejo SSBN658, from 65-68. USS Halibut SSN587, from 68-70 and the USS Ethan Allen SSBN608 in 74. Gary retired from the Navy as a ETCM (SS). Gary was Perch Base Membership chairman for the last 5 years and until his illness made it impossible to function. He also was USSVI District 8 director from 1994 to 2001. This Epitaph written for Gary by his good friend Larry Loftus YNCS (SS) Shipmate Gary Patterson passed away recently. His military career was outstanding and his devotion to Perch Base was shown in many ways.Gary was one of the founding members when Perch Base was initiated. From day one, his appreciation of what could be accomplished was evident. His inputs were accepted readily and have stood the test of time. Gary accepted the position of Membership Chairman and was exemplary in his job. While Perch Base expanded from nine members to the status it enjoys today, Gary was always working to improve all aspects of that chair. Gary was instrumental in the base vest quest and our own cavalr y
hat. The vest project started in San
Diego and terminated successfully in Prescott after an extensive
search of all the local embroidery stores. The blue cavalry
stetson was an innovation. Gary found the hats, the paint, the
embellishments and did all of the work. Gary Patterson was more than a
Perch Base member. In reality, hardly a day went by that Gary did
not do something for Perch Base or the national submarine
organization. He was constantly on the phone, on the computer, or
on the road promoting submarines and his home base. Gary attended all
the meetings he could and many meetings when his health should have
prevented the trip
from Prescott. Monthly Perch Base meetings seemed thin without him.
Shortly before Gary was incapacitated, and after a long absence, Gary
appeared one last time. All attending members gave him a standing
ovation. It was richly deserved.Gary, God speed and rest your oar. Sailor ... Rest Your Oar .......

Qualified on USS Grenadier SS210, in 1939 as EM Shipmate Manny Burrell, CPO Retired, a subvet member of both Perch Base and the Subvets of WWll, Pigboaters Chapter, passed away on July 21st, 2001. Seven Subvets and three members the City's USS Phoenix SSN702 Commission which Manny also belonged to were amoung the 100 or more mourners present at Manny's funeral service in Phoenix. Born in Phoenix in 1921 of Mexican-American / Native-American heritage. He also served on other submarines of note, continuing in the Navy and the Reserves for 30 years. Manny was a lovable Damon Runyon character, a great story teller, a gruff submariner with a twinkle in his eye, and a pleasure to have known. With a chest full of ribbons, when wearing his dress uniform it made him the center of attraction at every modern day submarine functions as Admirals and Submarine Captains alike rushed to his side with hands outstretched to be photographed with this, from Manny's own account, "the most decorated surviving enlisted submariner in the United States Submarine Service". Whether true or not, who cares? It was a pleasure and privledge to have known Manny and be regarded his "shipmate". He shall be missed. Sailor ... Rest Your Oar .......
